Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, as it appears, has taken the month of Ramadan as an advantage of holding open programme and conducting countrywide campaign against the government through Iftar party.
Jamaat and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir would hold several hundred Iftar parties across the country during the month.
When contacted for comments, Jamaat senior leaders were not available over telephone. Asked about the Iftar parties, the party’s Dhaka city unit leader Ataur Rahman Sarker said that the Iftar parties are their routine activities. “We arrange such programmes in each Ramzan,” he said.
The party will arrange a number of Iftar parties in the city for different categories of people. It hosted an Iftar party for the foreign diplomats at a city hotel on Wednesday. It was the first well-attended public event of the party after a year of silence on the public stage.
US Ambassador Dan Mozena and diplomats of other countries in Dhaka attended the function.
At the function, Jamaat Deputy Ameer Prof Mujibur Rahman delivered a brief speech before the diplomats. He told the foreign diplomats that the party’s top leaders were detained and put on trial under a black law.
