Chittagong Bureau :The daylong hartal called by Jamaat-e-Islami, passed off in Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar and three hill districts peacefully without any major incidents . Passenger buses, trucks, private cars went off the roads but the rickshaws, autorickshaws and tempos seen plying in the city. Police remained alert in most important points of the city during hartal period. Additional law enforcers including Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were deployed in the districts to avert untoward situation.Additional Deputy Police Commissioner Babul Akhter said that no picketer was seen on the street. No procession nor rallies were brought out in the city. On May 12, Port city Jamaat called dawn-to-dusk hartal in greater Chittagong protesting the arrest of city Jamaat Ameer and secretary among 21. Earlier, law enforcement agency arrested 21 Jamaat men, including port city Jamaat Ameer and former lawmaker ANM Shamsul Islam from a meeting at Dewanbazar Jamaat office in the city on Monday afternoon. No violence has been reported so far in the port city or elsewhere in the district, Additional Deputy Commissioner Babul Akhter also told this correspondent . Two activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir were however arrested while they were trying to take out a procession at Andarkilla area.
