Jamaat’s hartal ends today amid some stray incidents

The non-stop 48-hour countrywide hartal called by Jamaat-i-Islami protesting the death penalties awarded to its two senior leaders ended this (Friday) morning. The shutdown began at 6:00 am on Wednesday.
The hartal callers received poor response. Although no major occurrence was reported from any part of the country
during hartal hours, an incident of attack on police with grenades took place in Rajshahi, says bdnews24.com.
According to the report of the news agency, the Jamaat activists attacked police in Rajshahi city on Thursday morning. They brought out a procession from city’s Razarhata area. At the end of the procession, they threw two grenades into the policemen in front of Loknath School, said Khandaker Nur Hossain of Boalia Model Police Station. Although the grenades were loudly exploded, no one was injured. The police arrested 27 people.
Jamaat-e-Islami, contrarily, claimed that the 48-hour hartal was observed spontaneously across the country. In a statement on Thursday, the party Acting Secretary General Dr Shafiqur Rahman said that the government was planning to kill Jamaat senior leaders in the name of trial. But, Jamaat’s activities won’t be stopped through killing.
He claimed that over 150 leaders and workers of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir were arrested on Thursday. About 1500 Jamaat-Shibir men were arrested in the last three days. He demanded their immediate release. He also demanded release of Jamaat’s Executive Committee Member Mir Quasem Ali and Assistant Secretary General Muhammad Kamaruzzaman.
On Sunday, Jamaat announced a 24-hour hartal for Thursday protesting the capital punishment to Mir Quasem for war crimes. On Monday, the party called another 24-hour hartal for Wednesday protesting the verdict of the Supreme Court that upheld the death penalty of Kamaruzzaman.
The Islami party also observed a 60-hour hartal before the 48-hour hartal protesting death sentence to its chief Maulana Matiur Rahman Nizami.
Yesterday (Thursday) was the second day of the 48-hour hartal. Jamaat-Shibir men brought out processions in several parts of the city and other parts of the country in support of the hartal. But, they could not sustain for long due to police barricade.
In the capital, the Jamaat-Shibir men brought out processions at Jatrabari, Demra, Ramna, Bangshal, Lalbag, Dhanmondi, Mirpur, Khilgaon and Tejturi Bazar in Tejgaon in the morning. The processions were sudden and for short time. The Jamaat-Shibir men blasted two cocktails at Khilgaon. The cocktails were blasted after a procession of the Jamaat-Shibir men.
Transport movement was almost usual, but no long route bus was seen to leave or enter the city. Long route bus services remained suspended in most of the districts across the country.
