The countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal called by the Jamaat-e-Islami was observed on Wednesday with poor response. No significant incidence was reported from anywhere in the country during hartal hours.
Jamaat-e-Islami called the hartal disagreeing with the Supreme Court verdict that upheld the death penalty of war crimes convict and the party’s leader Mir Quasem Ali.
The day-long hartal began from 6:00 AM. The government and non-government offices, banks, educational institutions, shops and business establishments were seen open in the capital city since the morning.
Buses, minibuses, auto-rickshaws and private cars plied normally in all the city routes, including Gabtoli, Mirpur, Mohammadpur, Farmgate, Motijheel, Sayedabad, Jatrabari, Gulistan, Sadarghat and Uttara.
However, a large number of law enforcers were kept ready to meet the emergencies in various points in the city. Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) were also deployed in the city since Tuesday night to avert any untoward situation.
Hours before the hartal started, miscreants set two buses of Shyamoli Paribahan fire at Shyamoli CNG Refueling Station in Baliarpur area of Savar. Sub-inspector of Savar Police Station Farhad Hossain said that unidentified miscreants torched the buses parked in the CNG refilling station around 1:30 AM. However, no casualty was reported. On information, two firefighting units came to the spot and doused the flame.
Meanwhile, no long route buses departed from Sylhet, Khulna, Rajshahi cities and some other cities and district towns. On the other hand, the Jamaat-Shibir men brought out procession in different parts of the country.
