UNB, Satkhira :
An activist of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Kewratala village in Debhata upazila early Tuesday.
The deceased was identified as Sirajul Islam,45, a resident of Chiledanga village of the upazila.
Being tipped off that a group of Jamaat-Shibir men was holding a clandestine meeting in the area, a police team launched a drive in the area at about 5:00 am, said Jalaluddin, officer-in-charge of Debhata Police Station.
Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, the Jamaat-Shibir activists hurled crude bombs on
them prompting the police personnel to retaliate with firing that triggered a gunfight leaving Sirajul injured with bullets.
Severely injured, Sirajul was rushed to Sakhipur Hospital where on-duty doctors declared him dead.
Two police constables Amirul and Saiyedul were also injured.
