Miscreants have stabbed to death a young man in Bagerhat on the day when the third phase of upazila polls got underway. Jamaat-e-Islami’s district unit claimed the murdered Manzarul Islam, 20, was an activist of its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir. Another person was also injured in the attack that took place in Megnitola around 9.45am on Saturday. Locals sent the two injured men to hospital, Bagerhat Model Police Station OC Md Ali Azam Khan said. Bagerhat Sadar Hospital Medical Officer Mosharref Hossain said one of them was brought dead while condition of the other was critical. He was shifted to Khulna Medical College and Hospital. The dead body bore injury marks in many parts including his head, the doctor said. Manzarul was campaigning on behalf of Jamaat-backed vice chairman candidate Mostain Billah, locals said. Jamaat’s Bagerhat District unit secretary Sheikh Abdul Wadud said the Awami League activists had attacked the two when they were on their way to a polling station in Sadar Upazila. Meanwhile, Bagerhat’s additional deputy commissioner and returning officer Md Habibul Haque Khan said voting was being held peacefully in five Upazilas.
