The activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, blasted at least 15 cocktails, and vandalised five shops and nine vehicles in the city during the second phase of its countrywide hartal on Monday
The incident took place in Mohammadpur, Mirpur, Dhanmondi, Sadarghat, Jatrabari, Mogbazar and Dakkhinkhan areas.
Police also arrested al least 25 Jamaat-Shibir activists in this connection, police said.
At Mohmmadpru, Jamaat-Shibir men brought out a procession on Tajmahal Road around noon and blasted two crude bombs, vandalised four vehicles and five roadside shops, police said.
At Mirpur, police arrested a Jamaat man from Mirpur on charge of exploding a crude bomb at Paikpara.
At Dhanmondi, at least six crude bombs were blasted at Dhanmondi-8 in the capital. Dhanmondi Police Stration’s Officer-in Charge (OC) Abu Bakkar Siddique said that cocktails were exploded from a procession of hartal supporting in the area.
In the CMM court area, at least five crude bombs were hurled near the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) court area in the morning. Police arrested three Shibirmen at that time.
At Jatrabari, police arrested at least four activists of Shibir from a hartal processing at Kazla, Jatrabari in Dhaka around 5:45am.
At Moghbazar, Jamaat-Shibir brought out a procession at Moghbazar Wireless Gate intersection. They blasted at least three cocktails and vandalized three vehicles. Police arrested two Shibir activists in this connection from the area.
At Dakkhinkhan, police arrested at least 15 leaders and activists of Chhatra Shibir at Uttara 6:00am. Police claimed that they arrested them to check sabotage.
Mohammad Iqbal Hossain, Deputy Police Commissioner of Uttara Zone, confirmed the matter.
