UNB, Dhaka :
The prosecution of the International Crimes Tribunals on Thursday submitted a petition to it seeking to draw contempt proceedings against the leaders of Jamaat-e-Islami, its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir and a lawyer for allegedly making derogatory remarks on its judgment.
The three-member Tribunal-1, headed by Justice M Enayetur Rahim, on December 30 delivered the judgment condemning Jamaat leader ATM Azharul Islam, also a 1971 Rangpur commander of
Al Badr, a secret killing squad, to death for crimes against humanity, including genocide, during the Liberation War.
Among others, Jamaat’s acting ameer Mokbul Ahmed, acting nayeb-e-ameer Mobibur Rahman, acting secretary general Dr Shafiqur Rahman, and Shibir president Abdul Jabbar and general secretary M Atiqur Rahman and advocate Tajul Islam have been made contemnors accused.
According to the prosecution, Jamaat reacting to the judgment in a statement made a ‘contemptuous’ remarks while announcing consecutive two-day dawn-to-dusk countrywide shutdown describing the programme as in protest against government’s ‘conspiracy’ to kill Azharul Islam.
Besides, Tajul Islam, a counsel for the condemned war criminal convict, while giving his reaction to the press said, “Justice would have been done if the tribunal had thrown the prosecution evidence into the dustbin.” Rather, he said, “Justice would have been served if the prosecution had been fined for coming up with such evidence.”
Talking to reporters, prosecutor Tapos K Baul said the petition is likely to be heard on Monday (Jan 5).
