A dawn-to-dusk hartal across the country passed almost peacefully in the capital and some other cities on Monday. It was enforced by Jamaat-e-Islami in protesting the execution of their party Secretary General Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mojaheed.
The hartal was announced on the party website on Sunday signed
by Jamaat acting amir Makbul Ahmed. The movement of vehicles was poor on the roads and highways across the country.
But traffic in Dhaka was thinner than usual. The inter-city buses of nearly all routes were found in poor number on the streets. Privately owned cars were also running.
The patients and the low-income people were facing much suffering due to absence of public transports during the hartal.
The members of law enforcing agencies, including Police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), were deployed at all key points in across the country.
Shops and establishments in most areas were seen open. The usual rush of office-goers in the morning was unchanged. Office-goers were seen heading towards their destinations by buses and rickshaws.
A protest procession of Jammaat-Shibir was foiled by the police in the ciity’s Nayabazar area in the morning.
In Nilphamary, a flash procession was brought out in the bus stand area of Jaldhaka municipal of the district in the morning. In Chittagong, a procession marched in the Andarkilla area in the afternoon amid tight security.
In Sylhet, Police fired bullet to disperse a procession brought out by Islami Chhatra Shibir activists in the city during the Jamaat-e-Islami-enforced countrywide hartal in the morning. But none was reported hurt, our district correspondent reports quoting Rahmat Ullah, additional deputy commissioner in Sylhet.
In Khulna, a flash procession was brought out in the city in the morning which was foiled by police.
In Rajshahi, police foiled the procession of Jamaat-Shibir men. Police arrested at least five people from the protesting procession. In Rangpur, a procession was held in Pirgachha upazila of Rangpur district in the afternoon. Jamaat Secretary General Mojaheed was hanged around 12:55am on Sunday for committing crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War. He was buried in Faridpur in the morning.
