Jamaat-e-Islami has further called a countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal for Wednesday in protest against the Supreme Court’s verdict that has upheld it`s Assistant Secretary General Muhammad Kamaruzzaman`s death penalty. Jamaat acting Ameer Moqbul Ahmed and acting Secretary General Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, in a joint statement, called the 24-hour shutdown. Earlier on Monday morning, the Supreme Court (SC) upheld the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) verdict that awarded death penalty to Muhammad Kamaruzzaman for committing crimes in 1971. Jamaat announced the latest shutdown on Monday, means the country will be under a 48-hour hartal starting from 6:00am on Wednesday until 6:00am on Friday. Jamaat, however, has reduced its Monday’s 24-hour hartal to 12-hour in view of ‘Ashura’. Now the shutdown will end at 6:00pm on Monday instead of 6:00am on Tuesday. The party will also observe a countrywide prayer program on Tuesday and a demonstration programme on Wednesday.
