Jamaat demands Sayedee`s release, calls for calm

Staff Reporter :Prior to the final judgment of convicted Nayebe Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Maulana Delwar Hossain Sayedee, the party has demanded immediate and unconditional release of its senior leader. The party has also urged for praying for the party leader and called upon the party men to remain calm. The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court is set to deliver the judgment on appeal against Delwar Hossain Sayedee’s death sentence for crimes against humanity today (Wednesday).In a statement on Tuesday, Jamaat Acting Ameer Maqbul Ahmed said that the government had detained Delwar Hossain Sayedee in ‘false and fabricated’ case. He was convicted on ‘false allegations’, said the Jamaat leader, urging the government to release the party leader. In another statement, Jamaat Acting Secretary General Dr. Shafiqur Rahman called upon the leaders, workers and supporters of his party to maintain calm and exercise restraint during and after the verdict. Expressing concern that various quarters are instigating lawlessness and planning acts of violence with a view to spreading violence, the Jamaat leader also urged the party men and the people of the country to remain vigilant against such attempts, particularly against attacks on religious communities. “As a political party committed to democratic values, Jamaat-e-Islami strongly believes in expressing its views in a peaceful and democratic manner,” he said.
