Staff Reporter :Terming the execution of Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mojaheed for war crimes as ‘cold-blooded murder’, Jamaat-e-Islami has called for a countrywide daylong hartal for today (Monday) protesting the execution. Jamaat Acting Ameer Maqbul Ahmad made the announcement of the hartal in a statement soon after hanging of Mojaheed at the Dhaka Central Jail late Saturday night. He also announced that Gayebana Janaza and doa mahfil were offered across the country on Sunday.Following the Supreme Court’s rejection of Mojaheed’s review plea against his death sentence on Wednesday, Jamaat had also called a countrywide daylong hartal for Thursday which was observed drawing poor response.Meanwhile, BNP has not made any reaction or announced any programme till filing this report around 10:00 pm on Sunday over hanging of its standing committee member Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury, who was hanged together with Mojaheed. However, after rejection of review plea of Salauddin, the BNP in its reaction said that their party leader was denied justice in the Supreme Court. He became a victim of political vengeance. Declaring the programme of fresh hartal and Gayebana Janaza, Maqbul Ahmad claimed that Mojaheed was innocent. He was not involved in war crimes in 1971. He is the worst victim of a deep-rooted conspiracy of the government against the Jamaat-e-Islami. About mercy petition, he claimed that the government staged a drama ahead of hanging of Mojaheed. The Jamaat secretary general did neither file mercy petition to the President nor apologise admitting his crime. The ‘mercy-drama’ was also a part of government’s conspiracy, he further claimed. As part of the countrywide programme, Jamaat leaders and activists offered Gayebana Janaza and arranged doa mahfil in several part of the country. Gayebana Janaza was also offered for Salauddin Quader Chowdhury. Two Jamaat activists were arrested at Haziganj upazila in Chandpur from a Gayebana Janaza. Later, they were sentenced for six-month imprisonment by a mobile court. UNO of Haziganj Sheikh Murshidul Islam conducted the mobile court and issued sentences for Jamaat men Golam Faruk Yeahia and Jakir Hossain. The Jamaat men offered a Gayebana Janaza at Moghbazar in the capital city, praying for salvation of Mojaheed’s departed soul. The Gayebana Janaza was also offered in Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Noakhali and Laxmipur.
