Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has called countrywide daylong hartal for today (Thursday) after the Supreme Court (SC) upheld the death penalty of war crimes convict Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mojaheed.
Maqbul Ahmad, Acting Ameer of the party, gave the hartal call in a statement hours after verdict on the review petition filed by Mojaheed, Jamaat Secretary General and a former minister of the BNP-Jamaat alliance government, against his death penalty. Hospital, pharmacy, ambulances and vehicles carrying dead bodies are exempted from the hartal jurisdiction.
The Appellate Division of the SC on Wednesday upheld its previous judgment on Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mojaheed, rejecting his plea for reviewing death penalty for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971.
Maqbul Ahmad said that the judgment had deprived his party leader from getting justice. Mojaheed is the worst victim of a deep-rooted conspiracy, as the government is trying to kill the Jamaat leader with an aim to making leadership vacuum in the party. Jamaat secretary general has been convicted in false and fabricated cases, he said.
Meanwhile, Jamaat-e-Islami brought out several processions in the capital city and several other parts of the country following the SC verdict. However, the processions were sudden and for the short-time.
The Jamaat men brought out a procession at Moghbazar in the city. The party’s central leader Md Selim Uddin led the procession. The party also brought out processions in Rajshahi, Sylhet, Khulna, Barisal, Rangpur, Comilla, Narayanganj, Gazipur, Mymensingh, Noakhali, Feni, Dinajpur, Pabna, Sirajgaj, Satkhira and Faridpur.
