Jamaat calls 36-hr hartal in Rajshahi div from Saturday

UNB, Rajshahi :Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Wednesday called a 36-hour hartal in Rajshahi division from Saturday protesting the killing of one of its leaders in a ‘gunfight’ with detectives.City unit Jamaat will enforce the shutdown in eight districts of the division at 6am on Saturday and the hartal will end at 6pm on Sunday.City Jamaat ameer Prof Abdul Hashem confirmed the hartal.Earlier, Nurul Islam Shahin, secretary of the city ward No 30 unit of Jamaat and a teacher of Islamia College of the city, was killed in a ‘gunfight’ with members of the Detective Branch (DB) in Nalkhola area under Matihar thana of the city early Wednesday.Assistant police commissioner Iftekhayer Alam of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police said a team of DB police launched a drive in the area along with Nurul Islam to recover firearms in the dead of night.Sensing the presence of the law enforcers, activists of Jamaat-Shibir fired gunshots in a bid to snatch him, forcing the law enforcers to retaliate, which triggered a gunfight.
