Jalaler Golpo to be screened in Melbourne

Jalaler Golpo the first movie by Abu Shahed Emon for direction will be shown in the ‘Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM)’ on August 22. IFFM an international film festival that looks to propagate the attraction of South East Asian movies across the ‘Down Under region is hosting its 2015 version ‘Equality’ at Hoyts Melbourne Central, Swanston Street, Melbourne in Australia. The festival started on Friday and will end on August 27. Jalaler Golpo will be screened in the ‘Films From Subcontinent’ category of the festival.
IFFM is home to the diversity of one of the world’s largest film industry- ‘Bollywood’ and the ethnic vibrancy of South East Asia. The festival features masterclasses of world famous Indian dance forms and Telestra dance competition. The award delivery nights of the festival also include fashion shows proceeds from which are donated to Melbourne’s Royal Children’s Hospital.
Jalaler Golpo has in its cast the likes of Arafat Rahman, Mohammad Emon, Toukir Ahmed, Mosharraf Karim, Moushumi Hamid, Shormimala, Nayan and Mitali among others. Debutants Arafat Rahman and Mohammad Emon have played in the lead role of the film.
The film is about the struggles of a boy dreaming to become a man of reckoning in the society. Like the prophet Moses this boy also gets rescued from a river at his infancy. He is then nurtured by Miraj, Karim and Sajib one after another. But everytime he is left again to face the next tide of life alone. The tortuous ripples of his journey leading up to the life of a gangster are very much akin to the unpredictable ebbs of a river.
Jalaler Golpo has been produced by Channel i’s managing director Faridur Reza Sagar under the banner of Boutique Cinema of Impress Telefilm Ltd. Music of the film has been orchestrated by Chirkut.
In July Jalaler Golpo won the award for the best film and best actor at the 19th Avanca International Film Festival organised by Portugal. Mosharraf has won the best actor award for the film. In the Busan film festival held between September 2 and October 11 last year in Busan, South Korea the movie became the first Bangladeshi movie to be premiered. In the festival the movie won the ‘Asian Cinema Fund’ while competing against Japan, China, South Korea, India and Iran.
Previously Jalaler Golpo was screened at the 6th Fiji International Film held from July 16 to 23 in Suva, 45th International Film Festival (IFFI) in Goa of India, 33rd Fajr International Film Festival in Tehran of Iran and 7th Jaipur Film Festival in Rajasthan of India.
In the latter one it won the best debutant director award in February this year. At IFFI it became the first Bangladeshi movie to enter the ‘A Window on South Asian Cinema’ Club.
