The theatre club of Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) staged its 4th show of 17th production, ‘MOHUA’, at Bangladesh Shilpokala Academy recently. The club performed the play in front a full house audience some of them were guests but the majority paid to watch the play. IUB Theatre Club patron Prof GM Shahidul Alam Head, Department of Media and Communication, IUB was present. The play was directed by Md. Rafiqul Islam. The cast and the entire team were really excited as they could perform such a metaphoric play symbolizing a very deep meaning emphasizing the importance of believers of the heart. The story of Mohua talks Mohua is one of famous ballads written by Dwija Kanai in seventeen century. The hero and heroine of this ballad are Mohua and Nader Chand. This is an eternal love story. Mohua, a Brahmin girl, is the center character of the story.
The story starts with 6-month-old Mohua getting stolen by Humra Bede (Leader of a gypsy group), who brought her up in the gypsy community. Mohua’s stunning beauty was the main reason for him to steal her. Their only job was to show performances. One day they reached Nader Chand’s village where the destiny made him meet Mohua and fall in love at first sight. As soon as Humra came to know about their love affair he left that place immediately with Mohua. She tried to flee away from him to go back to Nader Chand. But the destiny took her to death slowly. On the way she was ill-treated by a merchant and a saint who would convince her that they could help her to get to her lover. She fought with every situation and got back to her lover.
But at the end, they got trapped by Humra and the story ends with Mohua’s tragic death. She had to kill herself to save her chastity and above all her love.
The cast of the play includes Quazi Azib Mahmud Tonmoy, Ahmad Sirajus Shams, Masudul Hasan Shawon, Tawfiq Mahmud Tonmoy, Nafees Mainuddin, Mamun-Ur-Rashid, Mahfuja Akter, Rashidul Islam Khan, Tapty Haque, Arno, Kiran Barua, Faisal, Shartaj, Sharmin, Ayesha, Shohan, Shuchay, Kushi, Proshenjit, Amrin Suborna, Heyadat, Shovon, Pritom, Alok, Dibbo, Inna, Monem, Marzan, and Arif.
