Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) reached the semifinal for the first time in the Clemon Indoor Uni Cricket Tournament eliminating Stamford University by three wickets in a nerve shattering first quarterfinal at the Shaheed Suhrawardi National Indoor Stadium in Mirpur on Sunday.
They will play the semifinal on Monday at the same venue.
Earlier, the IUB smartly moved into the quarterfinal in the Clemon Uni Cricket eliminating defending champions East West University by 25 runs in the Group A match on Saturday.
In the day’s first quarterfinal, Stamford University opened the innings first after winning the toss and scored a moderate 133 for 5 in stipulated 8 overs.
Opener Liton Sarker (retired 50), two down Manik Khan (41), Mazidur Rahman (12) and Moinul Hossain (not out 12) were major contributors for Stamford University reaching the double figures.
Mohammad Rafiuzzaman and Sajib Kar grabbed two wickets each conceding 19 and 51 runs while Shahriar Hasan took one wicket for 25 runs.
In reply, Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) reached the target scoring the match-winner 134 for the loss of four wickets in the last ball of the final over.
IUB opener Azmir Ahmed quickfired 11-ball 51 runs featuring two fours and seven sixes and was adjudged man of the match in the second consecutive match.
Besides, Sajib Kar (38), Rafsan Al Mahmud (10) and Amanullah Aman (not out 10) were the other major contributors to lift IUB to their dream semifinal.
Manik Khan claimed two wickets for 31 runs while Obaidul Huq took one for 38 runs.
In the day’s other matches, Sylhet Metropolitan University beat Asian University by six wickets; IUBAT defeated Bangladesh Medical College by 13 runs; European University beat United International University by 12 runs while the match BRAC University and State University ended in tie.
