Probe body formed: IU dormitories vacated: 2000 sued in 3 cases

Kushtia Correspondent :The authorities of the Kushtia Islamic University (IU) have formed a six-member probe body to investigate the Sunday’s violence on the campus centering the death of a student.Dean of the Applied Science and Technology Faculty of the university Prof M Kamaluddin will lead the body as the convener, while Deputy Registrar SM Abdul Latif is the member-secretary. The other members of the committee are Prof Ruhul Quddus M Saleh, Prof Mahbubul Afrin, Prof M Iqbal Hossain and Prof Abdus Shahid Mia. The committee has been asked to submit its report within 21 working days. The students of the university on Sunday went on rampage following the death of Wahiduzzaman Titu, a third year student of Biotechnology & Genetic Engineering Department of the university. He was killed in a road accident on the campus. The authorities closed the university for an indefinite period and asked the male students to vacate dormitories by 6:00 pm on Sunday and the female students by 10: 00 am on Monday. Later, time for the male students was extended and they left their dormitories by Monday morning. The students faced trouble when they were leaving the dormitories, as there was transport strike Kushtia protesting vandalizing of vehicles during the Sunday’s unrest. Meanwhile, the university authorities and police filed three cases against the students of the university in connection with the vandalizing administrative building, the resident of the Vice-Chancellor and vehicles. About 2000 unnamed persons were sued in the cases filed with Islamic University Police Station on Monday. Some 500 were sued in the two cases filed by the university authorities, while 1500 others were sued in the case filed by the police, Officer-in-Charge of the Police Station Mohibul Islam confirmed the news. IU VC Prof Dr Abdul Hakim Sarker said that they were trying to restore the peaceful atmosphere on the campus. Proctor Prof TM Lokman Hekim said that they would file a case against the killer bus and its driver.
