The BNP on Thursday accused the government of forming the search committee with partisan persons to reconstitute the next election commission.
“The government meanwhile issued arrest warrant against Tarique Rahman, which does not reflects its sincerity for a fair election,” said BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir in a statement in the evening. He demanded withdrawal of all ‘fabricated’ cases against Tarique Rahman soon.
Earlier BNP Vice-Chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu on Thursday labeled the search committee to reconstitute the next EC as ‘farce committee.’
“It is really a farce committee. The BNP cannot expect anything good from such committee. We are totally disappointed and aggrieved,” Shamsuzzaman Dudu said while addressing a human chain programme in front of the National Press Club organised by the National Youth Forum demanding release of BNP Assistant Organising Secretary and President of the party’s Kishoregonj district unit, Shariful Alam. He is now in jail.
He also said, “The government has rejected all our suggestions for a neutral search committee. The committee is not capable of doing anything good for the nation.
“If the government arranges another election like the January 5 onen, it will be their nightmare! The BNP will then take to streets.”
The BNP leader said that the people were found hopeful after the President’s initiative to hold talks with the political parties. But the six-member committee did not reflect people’s interest for a fair election.
“The BNP proposed to form a non-partisan and acceptable election commission in associations with the political parties,” Dudu said.
The BNP leader accused the government of including such persons in the committee who are loyal to the government. The government did it on the advice of the former search committee.
Saidur Rahman, the President of the organisation presided over the programme. BNP central leader Abu Naser Muhammad Rahmatullah and Khaleda Rabbani, among others, were present.
