Xinhua, Milan :
The Italian Textiles Trade Show, Milano Unica, has drawn increasing attention to companies that showcase collections designed with sustainable criteria.
A total of 19 exhibitors took part in the three-day fair that ended in Italy’s Milan on Thursday. They were selected by organizers as “reliable suppliers that offer fabrics and fashion accessories that are environmentally friendly.”
“We embarked in this project because we are deeply convinced that sustainability is a key factor in contemporary industry competitiveness, in addition to an ethical commitment,” President of Milano Unica Silvio Albini, whose cotton company Albini was also in the green selection, said.
A sustainable product is designed and manufactured with raw materials, chemicals and technologies that ensure the best environmental performance as well as respect for people, Carlotta Saibene Canepa, new-generation owner of Canepa textile company, explained to Xinhua.
She said these companies adopt sustainable business models, manage supply chains that ensure fair working conditions and wages, and favor the preservation of traditional craftsmanship values.
The elimination of hazardous chemicals, traceability, animal welfare, biodiversity conservation and fair trade are among the aspects that contribute to define the concept of sustainability, she noted.
Four years ago, Canepa started producing and proposing green products. “The market is moving the first steps in this direction, and we are proud of being on the modern frontline,” Saibene Canepa went on saying.
For example, Canepa’s eco-friendly fabrics for neckwear and scarves are manufactured with a patented technology which reduces the amount of water used by 12 times, and energy consumption and CO2 emissions up to 90 percent compared to the standards in use in the textile industry.
Not only sustainable processes are good for the environment and society, but also can improve quality, Saibene Canepa noted. “It is both an ethical and strategic choice,” she highlighted.
Tessitura Attilio Imperiali, also selected as a green company, has especially attached great importance to sensitize young generations.
“This year we have launched the Imperial Fashion Academy project focused on sustainability and recycling,” Alessandra Imperiali, new-generation owner of the company, said.
The project was implemented in collaboration with undergraduate courses in fashion design through training, material supply, contests and scholarships, and may be extended to foreign students in the future, she told Xinhua.
Imperiali said her company especially focused on fabrics and accessories made from recycled or second life materials.
