Identity of dead neo-JMB leader Tamim Chowdhury has been confirmed through DNA tests, police said on Tuesday.
“We received the DNA report on Tuesday and it confirmed the identity of Tamim,” Masudur Rahman, Deputy Commissioner (Media) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) said yesterday.
Tamim, the mastermind behind the Holey Artisan Bakery attack, was killed on August 27 as law enforcement agencies raided his den in Paikpara area in Narayanganj.
The police official said they had collected samples from the body and sent those to Canada for matching and examining.
“DNA samples from Tamim body were examined in Canada it matched with the samples taken from the bodies of his father Shafi Ahmed Chowdhury and sister living there,” Masudur Rahman said.
The test sample was sent to Canada for verification, he said. “Earlier, Tamim was identified with his photograph.”
According to International militant outfit IS, the byline of the article, published in IS’ Rumiyah magazine, says: “Abu Dujanah al-Bengali (Tamim Chowdhury), Former Head of Military and Covert Operations of the Soldiers of Khilafah in Bengal.”
On July 1, armed assailants attacked Holey Artisan Bakery killing 20 hostages including 17 foreigners. Two police officials also killed in the attack.
