Irregularities continue in the sale of rice for Tk 10 per kilo for the ultra-poor people through out the country, with a threat to foil the government’s sincerity. The poor people across the country alleged that the rich and the influential families were grabbing the rice at their cost.
In many places, rice dealers, UP members and businessmen are making a good profit, cashing the poor people’s helplessness. In addition, many VGF and old age allowance card holders were buying ultra poor people’s rice at Tk. 10. Some dishonest dealers sold the rice to the black marketers.
The Food ministry on October 6, gave directives to the Deputy Commissioners to go tough against irregularities in order to maintain sale of rice at Tk 10 a kilogram under the ongoing government food scheme for the ultra-poor.
In the meantime, the authority canceled licenses of some corrupt dealers across the country. Some officials have also been suspended. But the irregularities continue.
In Faridpur, rich people from Alfadanga allegedly got ultra poor men’s rice at Tk 10 per kg. People from Berirhat village alleged that an owner of a medicine shop three-storeyd building, has got the facility surprisingly. One of his brothers is staying abroad and sending lots of money in his family.
On the other hand, one of the dealers managed a card,
card number being 389. At Dhuljuri village under the same Upazila, a UP member also got the card, the number whereof is 386.
At Satak in the district of Sunamganj, the administration cancelled the dealerships of two dealers named Abdul Quadir Mollah and Azizur Rahman in Dakkhin Khurma Union Parishad on he charge of breaking rules. The Upazila Food Control Officer Shahab Uddin Ahmed was also suspended on account of his negligence to duties. The UNO of the upazila Arifuzzaman confirmed the news saying the authority had taken the action after irregularities were detected.
In Pachbibi Upazila, police have arrested the Awlai UP Chairman Abdur Razzak after getting allegation of involving into irregularities.
In Faridganj of the district of Chandpur some dealers were found involved in irregularities. In Faridganj Dakkhin UP, dealer Shah Poran allegedly did not maintain justice while measuring out rice. Former UP Member Rafiqul Islam rushed to the dealer after getting allegation from some of the victims. Rafiqul Islam said, “I found that the dealer took Tk 300 from the people, but measured out less than 30 kilograms of rice.
Some dishonest dealers were taking extra signatures from the card holders in Rupsha Uttar UP of the same district. The victims said, the dealer gave them rice for two times, but took signatures thrice. It is nothing but corruption. The card holders Jahir Alam, Sanaullah, Hashmatunnesa and Parul Begum, among others, complained to the Deputy Commissioner. The DC gave them assurance of taking legal action.
In Barisal, some dishonest government officials managed the ultra-poor cards at Raipasha Korapur UP. The people alleged that the irregularities were continuing in the sadar and Gouranadi upazilas of the district. The deprived poor said that the dealers and influential were selling the rice in black markets.
