Staff Reporter :
An allegation of corruption has been raised against the railway ministry in recruiting 1,441 employees as Khalasi (class four staff).
In the last week meeting of Standing Committee on Ministry of Railway, the issue of irregularities in the recruitment process was raised.
But while talking with The New Nation, the Railway Minister Md Mazibul Hoque dismissed allegation of irregularities and said that reports published in some national dailies about the recruitment are false, imaginary and baseless.
He said, “Around 40 thousand people applied for the post of Khalasi. But we had the capacity to appoint only 1441 people. So, those who did not get jobs are trying to create a controversy and clouding the transparent recruitment process of the railway.”
Mazibul Hoque said “We have done the whole recruitment process in a transparent way and in accordance with the rules.”
“So reports run by some national dailies against the ministry and the officials of railway are completely baseless.”
He also said, “We get many requests during any recruitment. Even minister, MP and workers’ unions send us recommendations. But we are unable to serve them. In the interest of fair appointment, there is no scope to entertain any request of any quarter. That’s why those whose recommendations could not be maintained are trying to tarnish the image of the railway ministry by creating controversy about the recruitment process.”
It is mentionable that due to shortage of manpower, currently railway ministry is facing problems to run trains. In last two years around 8000 people were appointed to solve some crisis in the railway. Still several thousands of posts in the railway are vacant. Soon those posts will be fulfilled through transparent way and in accordance with the rules, said the Minister.
“So, there is no scope to accept the blanket accusation against the recruitment. We will take legal action if anyone can prove allegation against any person.”
Railway sources said 29 cases were filed in connection with the recruitment of railway till 2010. And all kinds of recruitment in the railway were halted due to High Court directives. On that time railway faced huge manpower crisis. Later, courts withdraw the embargo after railway ministry win the cases through legal process.
After that the Railway ministry invited applications towards the close of 2014 for Khalasi. Around 40 thousand people applied for the post.
Soon, basket of requests came to railway minister for the post. Requests came from many quarters including minister, lawmaker, various railway organisations, journalists and top railway officials.
Another railway sources said that in a total 3500 requests came for the post. Of them a large number of requests came from Railway Sramik League (630) and Railway Sangram Parisad (239).
For transparent and corruption-free recruitment, Railway Ministry is thinking to recruit people through third party like PSC or any other organisation.
Railway sources said the recognised manpower of railway is 40,268. But at this moment, 24,415 are working on railway officers and employees
Later, the incumbent railway minister appointed 7215 people in 78 posts from 2012 to till now.
