Jhenaidah Correspondent :
Locals have brought allegation of irregularities in irrigation canal re-excavation in Sailkupa against the engineers of Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC).
The canals are maintained by Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB).
They said, the re-excavation programmee for the length of 1,650 and 1,750 metres from Khalkula to Kumar River at Mahishadanga was started by the BADC about two months back. But the authority was not maintaining the scheduled measures for digging the canal. They have been digging it with least space in width and depth made agitation among the people, especially farmers, fearing inadequate supply of water during irrigation.
A resident of Sondah village as well as a ward member of Manaharpur Union Parishad in Sailkupa Sariful Islam Gazi said, they excavators did not re-excavate the area adjacent to Sondah Madhyapara Bridge and some other parts in the area.
Further, a number of houses built in the canal area were not removed with an unofficial and amicable settlement between the house owners and the BADC engineers, the alleged.
The people in the area had requested the BADC authority to maintain the schedule which was denied by them.
An assistant engineer of BADC Arefin when contacted said, UNO of Sailkupa has been trying to settle the matter, while UNO Didarul Alam blamed the non-cooperation of the BADC engineers.
He (UNO) will give objection while the bills for the re-excavation work will be submitted, Didarul Alam said.
