Staff Reporter :
Irregularities have plagued most of the public-private hospitals and clinics in the country, and doctors and middlemen enjoy the profits, sufferers alleged.
They said, concern over the quality of healthcare services has led to loss of people’s faith on the country’s medical institutes. As a result, a good number of Bangladeshi patients are taking the services of countries like India, Singapore, the UK and the USA.
To fend off such unethical practice and irregularities, assessment of the country’s quality of healthcare services has become imperative, they said.
According to them, the victims alleged that the middlemen send them to private clinics. These incidents happen to those who come to the city from the rural areas.
They said, most of the hospitals and clinics have no adequate modern instruments, no sufficient infrastructure facilities and even no transparency of their accounts.
Many private hospitals and clinic allegedly started their functioning without proper permission. On the other hand, many others managed permission on political grounds while some on underhand negotiations.
The fees taken in the private hospitals and clinics are not regulated and also the account is not transparent, it was further alleged.
Although many of the medical centres are run by Trustee Boards, the money goes to the individual accounts. Their initiatives are absolutely business targeted, said the sufferers.
While in the developed countries, the medical services are highly regulated and standardized, a total contrast with the Bangladesh health sector.
The recent activities of the country’s medical sector have become a very worried and controversial issue.
Say for an example, a private clinic in Rajshahi namely ‘General Hospital’ has been accused of having a maternal mortality due to medical negligence. Sultana Begum, 30, was admitted to the hospital on April 17 and the next day she gave birth to baby boy. But she died the same day after the delivery.
Another incident occurred in the capital’s ‘Cresent Hospital’ recently. A baby was admitted there for treatment. But the baby did not get proper treatment even after paying Tk 3.5 lakh. Then the guardians had to sought RAB’s help.
Finally. a mobile court headed by RAB executive magistrate Sarwar Alam raided the Crescent Hospital in the city’s Mohammadpur area last month .
Recently, after the announcement of death of an infant at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), his family members brought the body to Azimpur graveyard for burial. But during the final bathing, the infant moved his body. Then his family members again admitted the baby to the Shishu Hospital for better treatment.
