Irfan Selim, bodyguard sent to jail after remand

The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (CMM) Court of Dhaka on Saturday sent suspended Dhaka South City Corporation’s councilor of ward No. 30, Irfan Selim, and his bodyguard Zahidul Islam to the jail on completion of the five-day remand each in two cases lodged for possessing illegal arms and narcotics.
Magistrate Moinul Islam sent the two accused to the jail after rejecting their bail pleas after police produced Irfan, who is a son of Dhaka-7 lawmaker Haji Selim and Zahidul Islam before the court after completion of their five-day remand.
Besides, on November 8, Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Qaisarul Islam placed the duo on a three-day remand each in arms case, while Dhaka’s Metropolitan Magistrate Satyabrata Shikder placed them on two-day remand each in narcotics case.
Investigation Officer and Chawkbazar Police Station Inspector Md Delwar Hossain appealed to the court seeking a total of 14 days’ remand for the two accused in the two cases.
Irfan and his bodyguard were placed on two days’ fresh remand on November 1 in a case lodged on allegation of assaulting an officer of Bangladesh Navy and giving him life threat.
Earlier, Additional Metropolitan Magistrate Asaduzzaman Nur of Dhaka on October 28 placed them on three-day remand in the case.
Irfan Selim and his men allegedly assaulted Lieutenant Wasif Ahmad Khan of Bangladesh Navy in the capital’s Kalabagan signal area in the evening of October 25.
The navy officer filed the case against Irfan, his bodyguard Md Zahidul Islam, Protocol Officer AB Siddique Dipu, driver Mizanur Rahman and other 2/3 unidentified persons.
Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) on October 26 arrested Irfan from his home of old town and seized 38 walkie talkie sets, one air gun, one foreign made pistol, five VPS sets, one handcuff, a drone, and seven bottles of foreign liquor, among other things.
RAB mobile court on the same day sentenced Irfan and his bodyguard Zahid one and a half years’ imprisonment and sent them to the Dhaka Central Jail of Keraniganj.
