Iraq reclaimed its top spot in Group C of the World Cup Asian Zone qualifiers after it overcame China’s Hong Kong thanks to an own goal. Hong Kong had lost their hopes of qualifying for the World Cup before Friday’s fixture, while Iraq needed a win to regain its lead on the table after Iran took provisional pole position with a win over Cambodia earlier on Friday. Iraq was utterly dominant but only scored the sole goal with a stroke of luck in the 13th minute as defender Fung Hing-wa accidentally prodded a cross into his own net. Iraq now leads the Group with 17 points, two ahead of Iran. The two sides will square off in the last round for the top place, while Hong Kong will take on Bahrain.
