The Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) would devise a strategy incorporating a series of actions to help the global Parliamentary community resist reasons leading to terrorism and militancy.
“I take initiative to propose a series of actions to help the global Parliamentary community prevent those things that breed terrorism and militancy,” said IPU Secretary- General Martin Chungong in a press briefing at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the capital on Monday.
The five-day IPU Assembly is underway in the capital from Saturday with the participation of about 1300 delegates from 131 member-states of the century old organisation. Chungong said, “Violent extremism springs from frustration, inequality in society, injustice, transgression of human rights and lack of opportunity. These are the things to be addressed to combat terrorism and militancy.”
He said that he would brief the executive committee on Tuesday on the strategy that the IPU would devise to enable the Parliamentary community worldwide to combat terrorism. “We shouldn’t allow terrorism to take place before you do something about it.” Calling terrorism a ‘global phenomenon’, the IPU secretary-general said, it is the single most dangerous threat to stability and peace in the world nowadays. “Today, no society is immune from terrorism and we, therefore, need global solution.” About the general debate on ‘Redressing Inequality: Delivering on Dignity and Well-being for All,’ Chungong said, IPU will highlight an action oriented proposal and device a programme to gain measurable achievements over reducing inequality.
“How parliaments can take practical actions at national and international levels to alleviate inequality and restore the dignity of human being in all aspects of social, political and economic arena,” Chungong said.
He said the Dhaka Assembly is likely to adopt three resolutions-the role of Parliament in preventing outside interference in the internal affairs of sovereign states, promoting cooperation on SDGs with focus on women and emergency item resolution. The emergency item resolution will put focus on famine affecting the population of Yemen, South Sudan, Somalia and Northern Kenya. This proposal was jointly raised by Belgium, the United Kingdom and Kenya.
Besides, the documents of outcome of the general debate on ‘redressing inequalities, delivering on dignity and well being of all’ will be adopted at the IPU Assembly on Wednesday, the last day of 136th IPU assembly.
