The first ever heads of government level of IORA Leaders’ Summit would be held in Jakarta, Indonesia on March 7 next year to commemorate the 20th Anniversary of establishment of the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA).
The decision was taken at the 16th Council of Ministers Meeting of IORA held in Bali, Indonesia on Wednesday when the Indonesian government hosted the event.
In the upcoming IORA Leaders’ Summit, the heads of government or leaders of the member states are expected to sign the IORA Concord along with an Action Plan to implement the decisions of the Concord.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shahriar Alam led Bangladesh delegation to the 16th Council of Ministers Meeting of IORA in Bali, attended by delegations from 21 member states and seven dialogue partners of the association.
In the meeting, Shahriar Alam in his statement said that IORA had emerged as a responsible forum that comprehensively addressed regional and global security issues pertinent to the region.
“IORA should take pride for its meaningful engagements during the last two decades in Indian Ocean region through sustained dialogue and cooperation,” he added.
The State Minister also highlighted the remarkable progress made by Bangladesh in various socio-economic sectors under the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The 16th IORA Council of Ministers Meeting adopted two outcome documents namely ‘Bali Communique’ and ‘Declaration on Gender Equality and Women’s Economic Empowerment’.
On the sidelines of the IORA meeting, Shahriar Alam held meetings with the Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop, South African Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation Ms. Nomaindiya Mfeketo and Minister of State of the United Arab Emirates Dr. Maitha bint Salem Al Shamsi.
During the meetings, they discussed various bilateral and multilateral issues focusing on further enhancing cooperation in different sectors.
The State Minister was accompanied by Rear Admiral Md. Khurshed Alam, Secretary of the Maritime Affairs Unit of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
