The International Organization for Migration (IOM) donated 50 wheelchairs to a local Cox’s Bazar school for children with special needs as part of stepped-up efforts to support the host community.
Several hundred participants including students with disabilities, teachers and community members were present at the event held at Arunodoy School.
IOM’s Program Manager for Transition and Recovery Patrick Charignon handed over these which was financed by government of Canada. Local government officials and dignitaries, including Md Kamal Hossain, Cox’s Bazar Deputy Commissioner were present.
Govern-ment figures state that Cox’s Bazar has 28,000 persons with disabilities and the Arunodoy School aims to help students enter the mainstream education system.
“Supporting persons with disabilities is a priority for IOM and we are pleased to offer this assistance as part of our increasing commitment to our friends in the Bangladeshi host community,” said Charignon.
The IOM effort is part of stepped-up support for the Bangladeshi host community and for persons with disabilities. Arunodoy is the first institution of its kind in Cox’s Bazar and will open its doors to 700 students; 500 special needs children and 200 street children.
