Chairman of the Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) Iqbal Mahmood on Monday stressed the need for involving beneficiaries in the country’s projects aiming to prevent graft during the implementation of these projects. “If beneficiaries could be involved in a project, the scope of irregularities will be minimised alongside creating their ownership on the project and making it sustainable,” he said while addressing a
views-exchange meeting with a delegation of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).
A three-member AIIB delegation, led by its Director General (compliance, effectiveness and integrity unit) Hamid Sharif met the ACC chief at his office on Monday morning.
Iqbal Mahmood observed that there is scope for corruption at every step of a project’s tender process and that is why the authorities concerned should be alert in this regard.
He suggested involving representatives of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) in the technical evaluation committees of different projects.
Noting that the Commission shows ‘zero tolerance’ to corruption, the ACC chairman said the national anti-graft agency has the legal mandate to prevent corruption in every project of the country. “If someone is found involved in corruption in the AIIB projects, he or she will be brought to justice.”
Corruption is a global problem, he said, so the ACC is trying to sign memorandum of understanding (MoUs) with anti-corruption agencies of different countries to effectively fight corruption together.
During the meeting, Hamid Sharif said AIIB wants to work with the ACC to keep their projects free from corruption and implement projects transparently.
ACC Commissioner AFM Aminul Islam, its secretary Abu M Mustafa Kamal, directors general Maidul Islam and Mohammad Monir Chowdhury were, among others, present at the meeting.
