Sagar Biswas :
Police are still in dark and failed to find any clue behind the country’s first suicide bomb attack at a Qadiani mosque in Rajshahi, though 12 days have already been elapsed after the deadly blast that killed one person on the spot and left several others injured.
Not only that, the investigators are yet not sure about the motive of the bloody bomb attack, whereas just after the incident police had claimed that it was a pre-planned attack on Ahmadiya
community conducted by three highly-skilled operators of a terrorist outfit.
“It has become difficult to us to recover identity of attackers, because we didn’t get any cell phone, moneybag or any kind of paper from the [dead suicide bomber] assailant. So, it is almost impossible to conduct technology-based investigation. Instead, we are depending on traditional investigation process… and it is the main reason behind the delay,” Md Nesarul Arif, Superintendent of Police in Rajshahi, told The New Nation on Tuesday night.
The SP said, “In fact, we are still in primary stage of investigation. We also haven’t got any significant clue about the attackers till the date. Hope, everything will be clear after the overall investigation is completed.”
According to SITE Intelligence Group, the Islamic State [IS] after the blast had claimed it was their first ‘suicide bomb’ attack in Bangladesh at Ahmadiya mosque. It cited IS as saying “soldiers of the Caliphate in Bangladesh” made first suicide bombing at Ahmadiya Muslim mosque in Rajshahi during “polytheist rituals”.
Pointing the issue, the SP further said, “The claim of IS is totally baseless. So far we know, the IS operatives do not use locally made improvised grenades or something like that. On the other hand, the local militants in Bangladesh use IED [improvised electronic device], those were found in Mirpur, Chittagong and other places. So, we are trying to get a link from these hauls with the Rajshahi attackers.”
At present, a team of Bagmara Police Station led by Inspector [Investigation] Md Abul Kalam Azad and another team of Police Bureau of Investigation [PBI] are conducting synchronised investigation into the incident of suicide blast.
Investigators have claimed that they are proceeding with the investigation targeting some important points, such as – the name of terrorist outfit, real identity of attackers [including the man who died on spot after blast], number of attackers and place of planning.
Just after the incident, the police filed a case with the concerned police station accusing two unidentified persons in connection with the bomb attack. Besides, it was told by police that the dead suicide bomber was a student of Rajshahi Polytechnic Institute. But ultimately it was not proved, and the suicide bomber still remained unknown.
“I’m not sure whether it was a suicide bomb attack, or not. We’re trying to trace the attackers. We are also collecting information about the activities of Jama’atul Mujahedin Bangladesh [JMB] in this area,” Motiar Rahman, Officer-in -Charge of Bagmara Police Station, told The New Nation yesterday.
On December 25, a youth aged around 25 years blasted a bomb as soon as the Juma prayers ended at Syedpur Mochmoil Chokpara Qadiani Mosque, a mosque of Ahmadiyya Muslim community in district’s Bagmara upazila.
According to local people, the attackers were three in number. One person who was waiting outside the mosque left the spot hurriedly after the bomb blast. Another one was waiting along with a motorcycle a few yards away. The main attacker [who died on the spot] was found wearing a suicide belt in his waist.
“We are sure that the suicide bomber was trained by any militant outfit. The bomber [dead] had been wearing suicide belt where the bomb was tied with a string. Besides, there were some electronic devices tied with his body. We have sent those to forensic experts for examination. But we will have to wait to get the identity of attackers and militant organisation,” said the OC of Bagmara.
