Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu called for announcing minimum wages for all workers, including the farm laborers.
“I think, it is very essential to announce uniform minimum wages for all kinds of workers in Bangladesh. Men and women engaged in household works would also come under this,” he said this on Thursday while inaugurating a national campaign in demand for fixing minimum wages for the agriculture laborers.
Non-government development agencies Steps Towards Development and World Vision Bangladesh jointly organized the inaugural ceremony of the campaign at CIRDAP auditorium in the city.
Presided over by World Vision Bangladesh acting National Director Jinpo Olowo, the function was also addressed by Member of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Labor and Employment Ministry M Israfil Alam, MP, World Food Programme Consultant Dr. Nitish Kumar Bebnath, Karmajibinari Director RokeyaRafiq Baby, researcher Pavel Partha, Steps Towards Development Executive Director Ranjan Karmakar and World Vision Bangladesh Advocacy Director Chandan Z Gomez.
The information minister said the present government is eager to announce minimum wages for the workers. Draft for a labor law has already been prepared, he added.
He urged the journalists, local government representatives and political parties to take part in the national campaign for minimum wage.
Fixation of minimum wages for workers would strengthen democracy and ensure rights of the workers, he observed.
