Intra-BCL clash prompts CUET closure

The Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) has been closed sine die following a deadly clash between two rival groups of activists belonging to Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on Monday night. The varsity administration took the decision on Tuesday morning at an emergency meeting attended by the deans, the departmental heads and the senior teachers.
The administration, after the meeting, in a notice said that tense situation was prevailing on the campus following clashes between two rival factions of a student organisation. Academic activities would remain suspended till further notice; the male students would leave the campus by 12 noon and the females by 5pm on Tuesday, the notice said. However, the post graduate classes would continue,
Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Md. Rafiqul Alam told the New Nation that the decision had been taken to avoid any further untoward incident. The classes would resume with the improvement of the law and order situation.
He also said that, an enquiry committee would be formed in the interest of justice on the campus.
Sources said that some activists of Joint-Secretary Mosleh Uddin group seriously injured varsity BCL Joint-Convener Shamim Talha Jeem by chopping him with lethal weapons on Monday night. Jeem was admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) for treatment. He is the supporter of CUET Chapter Chhatra League Convener Mehdi Hasan. Eyewitness and campus sources said, when Jeem and his colleague Moniruzzaman were coming towards the Bangabandhu Hall at about 8pm on Monday, several supporters of Mosleh Uddin group attacked them in front of the pond ghat adjacent to the hall. Although Moniruzzaman managed to escape, Jeem failed and the assailants attacked him with lethal weapons. Consequently he suffered serious injuries.
On the other hand, varsity chapter Chhatra League Joint-Convener Abdullah al Mamoon claimed there was no incident of clash with lethal weapons on the campus. Just a mini brawling took place on the holidays centering the World Cup Football.
A tense situation was prevailing on Monday overnight following the incidents. Additional police have now been deployed and the situation was said to have been under control.
