A 12 day-long international workshop on Mathematics titled ‘scientific research school on Mathematical Epidemiology/ Biology’ has begun on Monday at AF Mujibur Rahman Ganit Bhaban of Dhaka University. The workshop will continue till 20 May from 8.00 am to 5.00 pm every day.
International Centre for Pure and Applied Mathematics(CIMPA), a nonprofit organisation formed by France, Switzerland, Spain and Norway working to promote mathematical research in developing countries, has organised the programme.
About 50 applicants from different universities of Bangladesh and 15 researchers and teachers from India, Nepal, Philippines, Tunisia and Ghana were selected to participate in the school. The schools are running under the supervision of seven Mathematics experts from America, Canada, France, Spain and Italy.
DU mathematics professor Chandranath Podder and professor Jorge Mozo Fernández from Spain coordinate the research school.
The inaugural programme held at 4:00 pm on Monday at AF Mojibur Rahman Ganit Bhaban of Dhaka University. Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni presented as chief guest on the occasion.
Professor Md Shahidul Islam, chairman of Mathematics Department, presided over the inaugural ceremony while Dhaka University pro-vice-chancellor (education) ASM Maksud Kamal, France embassy chargé d’affaires Guillaume Audren de Kerdrel and AF Mujibur Rahman Foundation trustee Khushi Kabir addressed as special guests.
Education Minister Dipu Moni stressed DU Mathematics Department plays an important role in extending Mathematics education throughout the country by organizing different types of seminars, workshops, conferences and CIMPA summer school is one such initiative.
“University is not only a field of knowledge, but also a field for creation of new knowledge. Research is necessary for the creation of new knowledge. It must do well, if our university will get world-class recognition,” she added.
Thanking CIMPA, ASM Maksud Kamal, Pro-vice-chancellor (education) of DU, said, “Mathematics is known as backbone of science. This school will create an opportunity for the young mathematicians to gather knowledge, share their opinions and enrich mathematical research on Mathematical Epidemiology.”
France embassy chargé d’affaires Guillaume Audren de Kerdrel said,
“After the pandemic, we can all too well appreciate the importance of Mathematical Epidemiology. This reminds us that mathematics is not only an abstract subject, but that it has a strong impact on all of our lives, every day.”
The closing ceremony of the workshop will be held on May 20 with the distribution of certificates and crests.
