A workshop on “Towards Disaster Resilience: Deeper Understanding of Natural Hazards (UND)” began at Dhaka University (DU).
The Department of Disaster Science and Management of DU organised the workshop on Monday at CARS auditorium on the campus. DU Vice-Chancellor (VC) Prof. Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman inaugurated it while local coordinator of workshop and Dean of the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences of DU Prof. Dr. ASM Maksud Kamal presided over the inaugural function.
Prof. Dr. Tso Ren Wu of National Central University, Taiwan and Prof.
Dr. Simon C. Lin of Academia Sinica of Taiwan addressed it. Assistant Professor of the Department of Disaster Science and Management Md. Marufur Rahman conducted the inaugural session. While addressing, DU VC Prof. Dr. Md. Akhtaruzzaman urged political and academic leaders of Asia to work together to reduce risk of all sorts of natural disasters.
Bangladesh is highly vulnerable to natural hazards due to its geographical location, he also mentioned. Some others Asian countries also suffer from the same hazard, he pointed out.
The VC stressed the need for undertaking joint collaborative research on disaster management among the academic institutions of Asia to resolve these burning problems.
It may be mentioned that academicians and researchers from the eight countries of Asia, including Bangladesh, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, Indonesia and Taiwan, are participating in the workshop.
