A three-day workshop on “Towards Disaster Resilience: Deeper Understanding of Natural Hazards (UND)” began on Monday at CARS auditorium of Dhaka University (DU). DU Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Md. Akhtaruzzaman inaugurated it as chief guest. The Department of Disaster Science and Management of DU organized this workshop.
Local Coordinator of the workshop and Dean of the Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences of DU Prof Dr ASM Maksud Kamal presided over the inaugural function while Prof Dr Tso Ren Wu of National Central University, Taiwan and Prof Dr Simon C Lin of Academia Sinica of Taiwan addressed it. Assistant Prof of the Department of Disaster Science and Management Md. Marufur Rahman conducted the inaugural session.
DU VC Prof Md. Akhtaruzzaman urged the political and academic leaders of Asia to work together to reduce risk of all sorts of natural disasters. Bangladesh is always suffered by different types of disasters including flood, drought, cyclone, river erosion and salinity, he mentioned. Cyclones and floods caused massive damages in our country, he added.
Bangladesh is highly vulnerable to natural hazards due to its geographical location, he also mentioned. Some others Asian countries also suffer from the same hazard, he pointed out. The VC stressed the need for undertaking joint collaborative research on disaster management among the academic institutions of Asia to resolve these burning problems.
It may be mentioned that academicians and researchers from the eight countries of Asia including Bangladesh, Thailand, Malaysia, Myanmar, Indonesia and Taiwan are participating in the workshop.
