The International Women’s Day was observed in port city and its adjacent districts in a befitting manner with a fresh call to bring an end to repression on women, ensure equal rights from them and remove all sorts of violence, disparity and discrimination.
The Chittagong city Corporation, district and upazila administrations, Department of Women’s Affairs (DWA), different NGOs, socio-cultural and professional bodies chalked out elaborate programs in observance of the day in all upazilas and districts.
The day’s programs included releasing balloons, bringing out colorful rallies, seminars, discussion meetings and cultural functions.
The Chittagong City Corporation brought out a colorful rally carrying banners and festoons and formed an hour-long human chain on Chittagong Press Club premises. The rally ended on the city corporation premises after parading different city streets. City Mayor A J M Nasir Uddin inaugurated and led the rally.
Later, a discussion meeting was held at CCC auditorium this noon with CCC mayor in the chair. The day was observed with a fresh vow for ensuring participation of women in development, economy, governance, policy making affairs and different professions for building a middle-income, happy and digital Bangladesh.
Fire breaks out at Agrani Bank : Fire gutted valuables worth Tk 20,000 at a state-owned commercial bank in Kazir Dewri area in Chittagong city on Tuesday.
The fire originated from generator around 11:15am and was doused within half an hour before it could spread out of the generator room of Agrani Bank, Kazir Dewri Branch, housed on the first floor of Apollo Shopping Centre, said Nandan Kanan fire service officials.
Two fire units were deployed.
AM Abid Hossain, general manager of Agrani Bank Ltd, Chittagong, said, “Our staffs tried to douse the blaze with fire extinguishers as well as informed the fire service officials.”
