Int’l Women’s Day observed

International Women’s Day was observed yesterday across the country in a befitting manner with the call to work together for establishing women’s rights in every sphere of society.
The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is ‘Equality for women is progress for all.’
Different socio-cultural organizations arranged various programmes including colourful rallies, discussion meetings, human chains, drama and cultural programmes to mark the day.
Earlier, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages on the occasion.
Jatiya Konyashishu Advocacy Forum observed
the International Women’s Day through holding different programmes including rally, discussion and cultural function. To mark the day, the advocacy forum brought out a rally from in front of National Museum, where teachers, students, representatives of different government and non-government organizations participated.
Following the rally, a discussion was held in the seminar room of Engineers Institute with president of the forum Dr Badiul Alam Majumder in the chair. Leading women representatives of different organizations, among others, addressed the discussion.
Sramojibi Nari Oikya held a rally in front of Jatiya Press Club yesterday morning on the occasion of International Women’s Day highlighting the importance of the day for women workers. In Narsingdi, district administration and women affairs department organized a discussion at Shilpakala Academy here yesterday.
At the discussion, speakers said comprehensive efforts and changed mindset of all concerned could eradicate all sorts of violence against women to establish equal rights and dignity of the womenfolk in the society. A three-day Mela also began yesterday on this occasion at Sadar upazila parishad premises.
The United Nations began celebrating International Women’s Day on 8 March in 1975. Since then many countries around the world celebrate the international Women’s Day.
It is a day when women are recognized for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political.
It is an occasion for looking back on past struggles and accomplishments, and more importantly, for looking ahead to the untapped potential and opportunities that await future generations of women.
Bangladesh Television, Bangladesh Betar and private TV channels and radio stations aired special programmes, while newspapers brought out special supplements highlighting the significance of the day.
Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) and Nari Sangbadik Kendra formed separate human chains and held rallies in front of Jatiya Press Club to mark the day.
Banchte Shekho Nari organized a discussion at its central office at Dakhhin Jatrabari at 3pm yesterday. At the discussion, women right activists called for ensuring equal rights of women in all development fields of society.
In Rangpur, the International Women’s Day- 2014 was observed in Panchagarh with a fresh vow to end discriminations and repressions on women.
The district administration, Department of Women Affairs and other government and non-government organisations and bodies chalked out elaborate programmes in observance of the day.
The International Women’s Day was also observed at different districts including Pabna, Meherpur, Gaibandha, Jessore and Comilla echoing voices to establish women’s rights in all levels of society through removing all sorts of discrimination against them.
In Rajshahi, various government and non-government development organisations yesterday observed the International Women’s Day in the city and its adjacent areas in befitting manner with a vow to free the womenfolk from all sorts of violence, disparity and discrimination.
Marking the day, district administration and women affairs department brought out a colourful rally from C&B Crossing and paraded the city streets.
