The International Day of United Nations (UN) Peacekeepers- 2016 was observed at the divisional level here yesterday through various programmes amid huge enthusiasm and festivity in the city.
This year’s slogan of observance of the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers was ‘Honouring Our Heroes.’
Under management of the 66 Infantry Division of Bangladesh Army, a procession was brought out from Cantonment Public School & College and paraded city streets through Bangladesh Bank Mour to ‘Swasswato Bangla Muktijuddha Jadughar’ in the city.
Bangladeshi peacekeepers, officials and members of Bangladesh Army, Navy, Air Force, BGB, Police, BNCC, Bangladesh Ansar and students of different educational institutions took part in the procession before gathering at a discussion at ‘Muktamancha’ on ‘Swasswato Bangla Muktijuddha Jadughar’ premises in the city.
In the beginning of discussion, one-minute silence was observed in remembrance of the martyred members of the peacekeepers for their supreme sacrifice while maintaining the world peace and seeking divine blessings for their departed souls.
Rangpur Area Commander, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 66 Infantry Division and President of Rangpur Golf Club Major General Md Masud Razzaque, ndc, afwc, psc, attended the celebrations followed by discussion and cultural functions as the chief guest.
Later, members of Bangladesh Armed Forces, Bangladesh Police and
students of different schools, colleges and university rendered songs, dances and staged dramas in the cultural function arranged at the ‘Muktamancha’ to end the observance.

To mark the day Bangladesh Navy of Khulna Naval Zone arranged ‘Peace Keepers Run’and a colourful procession which began from City’s Shibbari Intersection around 8 am.
Zonal Commander (ZOC) of 55 Artilary Division of Army Major General M Nazim Uddin led the ‘Peacekeepers Run’ and colorful procession and addressed as chief guest.
The procession ended at the Khulna Circuit House Ground through paraded Lower Jessore Road in the city. Regional Commander of Khulna Naval Zone Comodore Shamsul Alam delivered the welcome speech before the procession.
Earlier, the chief guest inaugurated the rally through releasing pigeons and observed one minute silence for the honours of the slain UN peacekeepers.
Among others, high officials of Army, Navy, Police, UN officials to Bangladesh, attended the programme.
Students of different school and colleges, combined forces and Bangladesh National Cadet Core joined the procession.
The International Day for UN Peacekeepers is being observed on May 29 every year across the world. The purpose of the Day is to underscore the importance of maintaining global peace and pay tribute to those who have been lost their lives for peace.
Combined Forces of Bangladesh (BCF) and Bangladesh Police (BP) are involved in International Peace Keeping activities for the last two decades, an official said the news agency BSS.
A total of 1,44,739 members of BCF and BP has completed 54 missions in 40 countries across the world successfully, he said, adding that a total of 130 members of Bangladesh Peace Keepers has sacrificed their lives during duties for ensuring global peace.
