Int’l seminar on maritime vision held in BD

A two-daylong international seminar on “An Inclusive Maritime Vision for Sustainable Development of Bangladesh” was inaugurated on Wednesday organized by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University, Bangladesh (BSMRMU) at Bangabandhu International Conference Center.
Major General Tarique Ahmed Siddique (Retd), Security Adviser to Prime Minister of Bangladesh graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Nizamuddin Ahmed attended as the special guest. The Welcome address was delivered by the Vice-Chancellor of the University Rear Admiral M Khaled Iqbal. Theme of the seminar was “Prosperity through Maritime Vision”.
The Chief Guest in his speech emphasized on the importance of maritime research and education to materialize the potential of the country’s blue economy for sustainable development of Bangladesh. The Special Guest stressed on the need of maritime safety and security in order to accelerate the maritime development. The Vice-Chancellor of the University highlighted on the future prospects of maritime sector and described current and future activities of the University for creating educated and skilled manpower.
In the seminar, number of maritime experts and academicians from China, India, Greece, Australia, South Africa, France, Singapore, USA, UK, Belgium and the host Bangladesh are scheduled to present their papers. Representatives from various Ministries, UGC, civil and military officers, different universities, diplomats and maritime organizations were present. The faculty members, students and various officials of BSMRMU also attended the seminar.
Rear Admiral M Khurshed Alam (Retd), Secretary, Maritime Affairs Unit, Ministry of Foreign Affairs was the keynote speaker in the inaugural session. In his article, he focused on the economic and strategic importance of the Bay of Bengal littoral countries for a sustainable maritime development of the entire region. Professor Emeritus of BRAC University Dr. Ainun Nishat discussed about the importance of maritime education in Bangladesh.
Among various foregn speakers, Professor Thanos Pallis, President of International Association of Maritime Economists gave an overview on European experience in relation to port management and hinterland connectivity. Captain John Lloyd, CEO of Nautical Institute, London presented paper on consolidation of maritime training for better employment.
President of Bangladesh Enterprise Institute (BEI) Ambassador (Retd) Farooq Sobhan and Mr. Abul Kashem Khan, President of Dhaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry, were among the notable session chairs.
Speakers of the seminar marked various possibilities of country’s maritime future in line with socio-economic and sustainable development of Bangladesh.
