With the vision of promoting sustainable development in Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT), the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs (MoCHTA) and the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) are jointly organising a seminar during Bangladesh-ICMIOD Partnership on ‘Sustainable Development in Chittagong Hill Tracts: Inclusive Growth and a Prosperous Society’ on December 4, 2016. The seminar is being organized at a time when the Government of Bangladesh embarks on the process of implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), says a press release.
In recent years, Bangladesh has achieved remarkable economic success in terms of higher GDP growth rate and improved socioeconomic parameters. The CHT is ethnically, culturally, and topographically diverse and has rich natural and environmental resources with hills, forests, rivers, and lakes, and outstanding scenic beauty. But owing to its history of social tensions and low pace of development, the region remains far behind in socioeconomic development compared to the plain areas of the country.
To make up for lost time and expedite socio-economic development in the CHT, it is important to contextualize the sustainable development goals at the local level. This seminar will highlight development challenges, potentials, and opportunities and suggest a way forward to end poverty and bring prosperity to the region. Participants will hold informed discussions and brainstorm ideas on fostering sustainable development in the CHT region and achieving prosperity, peace, and stability.
The seminar will be held at Radisson Blue Water Garden in Dhaka, attended by about 50 renowned national and international experts from more than 20 countries, including ICIMOD’s member and core support group countries of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Australia, Austria, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Norway, Sweden, Germany, Netherlands, Pakistan, Switzerland, and the UK.A book ‘Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in Chittagong Hill Tracts: Challenges and Opportunities’ jointly prepared by the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs and ICIMOD with a message by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, will be released on the occasion.
Prof. Dr. Gowher Rizvi, International Affairs Adviser to the Hon’ble Prime Minister of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, will be the Chief Guest while Mr. Bir Bahadur Ushwe Sing, MP, Hon’ble State Minister, Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs, will be Special Guest. Dr. David Molden, Director General, ICIMOD will welcome the participants and Naba Bikram Kishore Tripura, Secretary, Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs and Chair, ICIMOD Board of Governors will chair the event.
The business session will focus on contextualizing the SDGs in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. Dr. Qazi Kholiquzzaman Ahmad, Chair, Palli Karma-Sahayak Foundation, will chair the session with panelists including Barrister Raja Devasish Roy, Circle Chief, Chakma Circle; Dr. David Molden, Director General, ICIMOD; Dr Atiq Rahman, Executive Director, Bangladesh Centre for Advanced Studies; Mr. Goutam Kumar Chakma, Member, CHT Regional Council; and Mr. Kirti Nishan Chakma, Independent Consultant. Dr Golam Rasul, ICIMOD, will give the Keynote Presentation on achieving the SDGs in the CHT.
