The International Literacy Day-2020 was celebrated in the district on Tuesday maintaining social distancing and health guidelines as elsewhere in the country with a call to attain cent percent literacy for creating skilled manpower to push forward the country towards desired development.
Marking the day, the district administration chalked out the elaborate programmes with the theme “Literacy teaching and learning in the COVID-19 crisis and beyond.”
In the morning, a rally and a discussion meeting were also held at the conference room of deputy commissioner (DC) here with additional deputy commissioner (ADC)-General Alamgir Kabir Saikat in the chair.
DC Abdul Matin addressed the meeting as the chief guest and civil surgeon Dr ABM Abu Hanif, Sadar upazila chairman Shah Sarwar Kabir and district primary education officer Md. Hossain Ali were present as special guests.
The speakers in their speeches said there is no alternative to literacy for overall development of the country and there is no alternative to skilled manpower for building a middle-income country by 2021.
The government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is fully committed to ensure education for all to create skilled manpower and human resources to build an enlightened nation, the chief guest said.
The government had taken various education programmes including non-formal ones to remove illiteracy from the society as well as to turn the country into a digital technology-based nation by 2021, the DC added.
