The International Day of UN peacekeepers-2019 was observed in the country with due respect along with other countries of the world on Wednesday.
The day long programme began with “Peacekeepers Day Assembly” arranged by Bangladesh Air Force Base Bashar, Dhaka and Air Force Base Zahurul Haque, Chattogram in the morning.
The event was inaugurated with releasing pigeons, balloons and festoons in Dhaka by Principal Staff Officer of Armed Forces Division Lieutenant General Md Mahfuzur Rahman.
In Chattogram Major General SM Matiur Rahman of infantry division inaugurated the event. To mark the day, the chief guest and representative of local UN organization delivered their speech highlighting the significance of Bangladesh Peacekeeping Forces in UN peacekeeping missions.
The representatives from Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Armed Forces, Bangladesh Police, UN agencies and Inter Service Organization, Dignitaries, Student of different school/colleges and media personnel took part in the events in Dhaka and Chattogram.
However, the day was observed in a befitting manner organized by 17 infantry division at Shahid Major Kazi Mosaddeque Hossain Hall at Sylhet Cantonment with this year’s theme – “protecting civilians, protecting peace”.
General Officer Commanding (GOC) and Sylhet Area Commander Major General S M Shamim-Uz-Zaman attended the programme as the chief guest.
The maiden speech was delivered by Brigadier General Tayeful Haque, brigade commander of 17 artillery Brigade under 17 Infantry Division.
DIG of Sylhet police Kamrul Ahsan, Group Captain of Air Force Abu Jahid and UN representative AA Khayrul Alam spoke on the occasion.
