International Day of the Midwife was observed on Tuesday in the country like elsewhere in the globe in a befitting manner as part of an ongoing campaign to highlight the needs for midwives. This year’s theme of the day is “The World Needs Midwives Today More Than Ever”.Marking the day, organizers arranged workshop, seminars, concert, singing contest, karaoke, rally, street parade, setting up stalls in market-places or other popular areas to publicize midwifery services and offer information and advice.Health and Family Welfare Minister Mohammed Nasim on Tuesday inaugurated a fair at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) marking the day.May 5 is the internationally recognized day for highlighting the work of midwives. International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) established the idea of the ‘International Day of the Midwife’ following suggestions and discussion among Midwives Associations in the late 1980s, then launched the initiative formally in 1992.
