The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction 2021 was observed in Kishoreganj on Wednesday. The International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction is observed since 1989, after a call by the UN General Assembly (UNGA) for a day to promote a global culture of risk-awareness and disaster reduction. In 2009, the UNGA officially designated 13 October as the date to commemorate the day.
The 2021 edition focuses on “International cooperation for developing countries to reduce their disaster risk and disaster losses.”
District Administration in Kishoreganj arranged a function marking 50 years of the cyclone Preparedness Programme (CPP) meeting and rescue examination at Gurudhayal Govt. College playground in the town on Wednesday morning.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) in Kishoreganj Mohammad Shamim Alam attended as chief guest while ADC(General) Nazmul Islam Sarker presided over.
It was addressed among others by Gurudhayal Govt. College Principal Professor Jamilur Rahman , Additional SP (Administration) Mustaque Sarker, Magistrate Obaidur Rahman Sohan, Magistrate Shafiqul Islam and Assistant Director (AD) of Fire brigade.
District Press Club President Mostafa Kamal, CAB district President Alam Sarowar Tito, Sadar model OC Abu Bakker Siddique PPM and others dignified persons were also present.
DC of Kishoreganj Mohammad Shamim Alam said Bangladesh is a model in disaster management.
The negative impacts of global warming and climate change are being observed around the world today. Bangladesh is one of the most disaster-prone areas in the world due to its geographical locations alongside climate change, recurrent natural disasters like cyclone, flood, tornado, tidal surge and lightning take place in the country.
DC also said Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had introduced the Cyclone Preparedness Programme (CPP) after about 10 lakh people were killed in a devastating cyclone in 1970.
