Speakers at a discussion in the city on Monday expressed high hope that Bangladesh will move forward by reducing all sorts of disasters and calamities, involving people from all strata specially acknowledging the experiences of elderly people.
The high hope was expressed at the discussion held at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the city, marking the International Day for Disaster Reduction.
Speaking as the chief guest on the occasion, Environment and Forests Minister Anwar Hussain
said risk in disaster is not only for Bangladesh, but also for the entire world.
“Disaster is a global problem,” he said, and urged all the countries to work together against disaster.
Observing that man-made disaster is much more dangerous than natural disasters, Anwar Hussain emphasized utilizing the experiences of elderly people as their experiences helped the mankind to survive till date.
Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya said Bangladesh has acquired high competence and achieved remarkable improvement in disaster reduction than ever before.
Observing that elders and children are the worst victims of disaster, he said Bangladesh will be able to reduce the risk of disaster to children and the elderly with the help of people from all walks of life.
As elsewhere around the world, Bangladesh is also observing the International Day for Disaster Reduction.
This year’s theme of the Day is ‘Resilience is for life’. The day is observed worldwide with the cooperation of United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR).
Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu, chairmen of the parliamentary standing committees on Disaster Management and Relief Ministry, and Secretary of the Ministry Misbahul Alam also spoke on the occasion.
