Int’l Customs Day today

Like other countries on the globe, Bangladesh will observe International Customs Day today.
The observance of the day marks the first official conference of the Customs Co-operation Council-the World Customs Organization (WCO).
The theme of the day this year is “Digital Customs: Progressive Engagement”.
President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina issued separate messages on the occasion, wishing success of the Day.
In messages they greeted all officials and employees of the customs department and the tax-paying individuals and companies.
In his message, the President said the theme of this year’s International Customs Day “Digital Custom: Progressive Engagement” is time-befitting.
He said Bangladesh Customs Department is working relentlessly to bring a radical change in the government functions, ensure transparency and accountability in export and import and make easy the regulations and formalities of customs through highest utilisation of technology.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, in her message, said the government is implementing various programmes to modernise revenue collection activities and bring dynamism in those.
The customs offices have been automated and digitised including ASYCUDA World for customs management, she added.
The Prime Minister said the government has increased manpower in the customs administration.
She said internal revenue collection increased manifold due to pursuing of information technology and modern customs management system.
