A 3-day long international conference on life, language and culture titled “Know the Neighbours” was held at Gono Bishwabidyalay on the occasion of 21st February and International Mother Language Day’ 2016.
The conference was jointly organized by Gono Bishwabidyalay and Jahangirnagar University (JU) to enhance knowledge about neighbours.
Prof Farzana Islam, Vice-chancellor of Jahangirnagar University inaugurated the conference at PHA auditorium of Gonoshasthaya Kendra recently.
She said, Bangladesh is surrounded by the West Bengal, Mizoram, Assam, Tripura and Meghalaya provinces in India. We share a congenial relationship with all this neighbouring states. However, JU VC said, we have not had sufficient exposure to the art, culture, history, tradition, religion, philosophy and so on of each other.
The conference would open the new windows to share current trends in regional literatures, history, politics, languages and women empowerment of each other in a wide perspective, she also added.
Prof Mesbahuddin Ahmad, Vice-Chancellor of Gono Bishwabidyalay presided over the conference while Emeritus Professor Serajul Islam Chowdhury presented the keynote paper.
He said in his speech, we need much more research and translation for this regional firm friendship. And the friendship must be against of capitalism.
Prof ATM Atiqur Rahman and Prof Monsur Musa, convener of the conference gave welcome speech. Dr Raahman Chowdhury, coordinator of the conference committee introduced the foreign guests; about 43 foreign participants were taking part in the conference. Mir Murtoza Ali, Exam controller of Gono Bishwabidyalay conducted the programme.
In the first day, three seminars were held on ‘International Relations and Geography, Culture of the Region and Religion and Cultural Harmony’. Prof Sishir Kanta Behara, Injangchungliu Pamei, Chingtham Diana Devi, Dr Thaimei Lamalu, Prof Nilama Bhagabati, Dr Prabir Pramanick, Dr Shreela Basu, Prof Abhra Bose and Dr Rajeev Dubey from Odisha, Manipur, Assam, West Bengal and Uttar Pradesh respectively presented their papers in these session.
In the second day, another three seminars were held at Zahir Raihan Aditorium of Jahangirnagar University on 23 February. Dr Sabyasachi Chatterjee from West Bengal, Prof JC Soni from Arunachal Pradesh, Sagarika Patnaik from Odisha, Subhas Chandra Das from Tripura, Prof Moon Moon Majumdar from Meghalay, Dr Sharmila Chhotaray from Odisha, Dr Anindya Syam Choudhury from Asam, Prof Sumit Mukerji from West Bengal presented their papers on education and mother tongue, gender issue and women empowerment and northeastern life.
On the concluding day, 5 seminars were held on Bengali literature and Little Magazine, Economy and Politics of the Region, Diversity of Language and Bangla Bhasa, Struggle and Culture, Partition and Migration at PHA auditorium of Gonoshasthaya Kendra on 24 February. A total of 18 scholars from different states of India took part in these seminars. A total of 11 Bangladeshi scholars also presented their papers in the conference.
Eminent thinker, historian of Bengal language movement and political analyst Badruddin Umar delivered his closing speech in the conference. He said that the people of Bangladesh are uninformed about our country and nation. The linguistic and ethnic minorities are oppressed here but the public are unknowing about it.
He urged on know the Neighbours along with the own people. Everyday cultural programme was held where the singers of Lalon Academy performed on the first day and staged a dance drama ‘Alor pothojatri’on the last day.
