Int’l Confce on Applied Statistics held at DU

A three-day international conference on “Applied Statistics: Meeting Challenges of the 21st century” held at Nabab Nowab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban of Dhaka University recently.
Institute of Statistical Research and Training (ISRT) of Dhaka University (DU) organized the conference marking its golden jubilee function.
Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali inaugurated the conference as chief guest while DU Vice-Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique addressed it at special guest with director of the ISRT Prof Muhammad Shuaib in the chair.
Foreign Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali urged the statisticians to play the pioneering role to promote socio-economic development in the country and meet the global challenge of the 21st century. He hoped that the conference would create a common platform for statisticians and enhance their quality of research.
He urged the teachers and researchers to contribute to implement development plans for vision 2021, which was declared by the government. Prof Arefin said applied statistics is very much essential for the human understanding of contemporary global problems and challenges.
“Statistical methods and techniques are improving and developing everyday around the world. Therefore, we have to adopt all these methods and techniques for data preparation and economic analysis to formulate appropriate plan for development,” he added.
He urged students and researchers to work hard to build a country to be free from poverty, hunger, malnutrition, illiteracy, fundamentalism and incivility.
A total of 150 representatives from 60 countries including Bangladesh are participating in the conference.
